One of them is Cukli. Cukli is refer to various of craft such furniture, carvings, statue, home appliances that carved with Cukli, pieces of clamshell cutting. After the carvings are made, the seashells are cut and stuck on the carvings as the ornaments in various formations such as circles or stars.
The furniture are furnished into dark color to give a modern glossy and shiny impression. Other than black, the customers can also order other dark colors such as espresso or dark blue, all come with glossy finishing touch.
Nowadays Cukli has create into various home appliances such as chair, table, cupboard, fruit basket and many more.
The Cukli craft is originated from West Lombok, especially in Sesela and Sayang-sayang. The wooden craft is believed by local peoples has exist since hundred years ago. It is proved by the existance of the Cukli carving Nurussalam Mosque one of the oldest mosque in Sesela.
“Local peoples are believed that handicraft is growing up in the village since a long time ago,” said Iwan Sastrawan, the chairman of Sesela art market.
The booming of tourism industry in Lombok in the 1980s make the craft being famous as a original handicraft product of Lombok. The increasing demand of the Cukli product in 1990s makes the craftsmen produce a variety of new designs.
From the furniture Cukli are applied for many product such as mask, bowl, paintings frame and many more. This makes Cukli become one of the best-selling export commodities from NTB.
But the production of Cukli is not as easy as it sound. Beside the clamshell Cukli need the best raw materials such as a first class mahogany or teak woods. As a furniture, the wood are processed into various goods such as tables, cabinets and chairs.
Before it is furnished the Cukli craftsmen Will make a pattern or design on the surface of the furniture. The pieces of clamshell are inserted into the carved motive one by one. It needs much time, focus and craftsmanship.
As a sample, a complete set of cabinets made up of hundreds pieces of clamshell and need more than a week to complete.
