Every year in Lombok, Rabi’ul Awwal- the third month in Islamic calendar- always come with happiness. It’s the month of Maulid the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Public squares, roads and the mosques were decorated for the festivals along the month. For many Muslims this is a longstanding historical and cultural event which they see as an expression of their joy and love for the Prophet, who taught them what it means to be a Muslim.
Maulid, is a feast day to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad SAW. The word “Maulid” is conjugated from an Arabic word “walada, yu’ladu, maulidan’, which means “the birth” refer to the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It takes place in 12th Rabi’ ul Awwal. But the celebration not just on the date, the Maulid was celebrate each day along the month.
Each villages in Lombok celebrates the event of Maulid in distinctive ways, under the influence of local traditions and native cultures. But in general, Maulid is enjoyed together by joining in parades or carnivals, having delicious and sumptuous meals with members of family and relatives.
At the peak days the people gather in the mosque and retelling of the Prophet’s journey from al-Barzanji poems. The al-barzanji refers to the name Allamah Sayyed Ja’far bin Hasan Al Barzanji who wrote the book “Iqd al-Jawahir”. The name of the writer itself is more popular than the book he wrote. The book contains the biography of the Prophet written in the forms of prose and poem.
Maulid Special Cuisine in Lombok
One of the most interested thing in Maulid celebration is the way the Lomboks celebrate it. For a day in the month, there will be a lot of special dishes in every house.
As the part of the celebration, every guest will serves with special dishes. A list of menu that never seen daily. As an opening the host will present traditional cakes such as Wajik or Iwel, Tempeyek, Cerorot, Kuping Gajah, Banget, Poteng (tape ketan), and more. The most special snack is Nasi Rasun, yellow sticky rice and sprinkled of fried grated coconut with spices shattered chicken. Nasi Rasun is only found at Maulid.
After that, as a main course another Dulang with list of menu such as rice, chicken curry (opor ayam), rendang, eggs, salty fried peanut (kacang asin), sate pusut, sayur ares, sayur nangka, and more. For the last of the menu fruits and soft dirink. (Zulhakim)
